A Copper Nickel Stub End Collar (also called a Lap Joint Stub End or Van Stone Stub End) is a short CuNi pipe fitting welded to the pipe end, used together with a separate loose backing flange that rotates freely over the stub end's lap. This allows bolt holes to be aligned without rotating the pipe, and lets the wetted surface be made of expensive CuNi while the structural flange uses a lower-cost material.
These terms describe the same component from two perspectives: 'Butt Weld' refers to how the stub end is joined to the pipe (a butt weld), while 'Lap Joint' refers to how it is used in the flanged assembly (with a loose lap joint flange).
